The Neuroscience of Right Brain Music

What we call “right brain music” is actually a thing, not just a style. The minds of musicians and listeners actually work differently. In the new episode of the Right Brain Music Podcast, we meet the ideal person to explain all this. David Rosen is a neuroscientist and an improvising musician. We discuss his leading edge research and the nature of creative “flow states,” in which improvisers get into a zone of hyper-focus on their craft. He also looks at the influence of psychedelics in combination with music.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and Dr. Rosen holds nothing back. His enthusiasm for both studying the mind and making music is contagious. We also hear samples of his own music, with the band Nakama, as well as two RBR artists that also exemplify the process of creative collaboration in real time: Bear the Sleuth and RACCA Trio.
